Chapter Twenty-Three

Ty watched Cassie blink rapidly. Her cheeks and neck were a little pink, and she looked as if she’d been daydreaming. All he’d done was kiss the back of her hand—and lick her knuckles—and she looked as if he’d stroked an erogenous zone. As if she were fighting off arousal.

He wanted, more than anything, to press her on it. To lift her hand and suck one of her fingers before kissing his way up her arm and over to her sweet, luscious lips. But he knew he’d freak her out if he did. He had to give her time to breathe. Time to accept what he knew was inevitable between them.

He wanted her, but there was a right way to go about it. She had to trust him, and he wasn’t entirely sure she did just yet. Not with this.

He wasn’t offended by it. She trusted him to help her, but she wasn’t ready to trust him with her body. He got that. A lifetime of being self-conscious about her appearance wasn’t going to disappear overnight. When they finally ended up naked together, he wanted her to know that he craved every inch of her.

How could she be so uncertain of herself when she was fucking gorgeous? It would have frustrated him if he hadn’t known where she’d come from and what she’d endured as a kid. Even if she’d been an outgoing child, having her own mother make her pretend they weren’t parent and child had to be a serious mind fuck.

“Um, how about frozen yogurt with caramel sauce?” she said when she found her voice again. “I’m afraid I got the lite version though.”

“Sounds good to me. How about we finish dinner, then I’ll clean up the dishes while you get bowls.”

“Oh, you don’t have to do that. I made the mess—”

“Cassie,” he interrupted.

“Yes?”

“You cooked dinner for me. Least I can do is clean up. But first I want to finish these delicious tacos, eat some chips and salsa, and talk to you about random shit.”

Her smile was a little tentative. She dipped a chip into salsa. “What kind of random shit?” she asked before popping it into her mouth.

“Favorite TV series.”

She blinked. “Is that a question?”

“Yes.”

“A Discovery of Witches. All three seasons.”

“Don’t think I’ve heard of that.”

“Really? It’s about a witch and a vampire, and they fall in love, but falling in love is against the rules—” She waved a hand. “There’s a lot going on. But it’s a romance at heart, and I adored every episode.”

“Okay, guess I’ll have to watch it and see why you like it so much. Favorite color?”

“Wait a minute. You didn’t tell me your favorite series.”

“Doctor Who. Tenth Doctor is the favorite, but I like them all, really. Every actor brings something to the role.”

She was grinning. “I like Doctor Who. Not that I’ve watched them all. Some of them are a bit intense when you live alone.”

“And a show about vampires and witches isn’t?” He loved watching her face when she talked about things she liked.
